My journey to the mission field #002
Aspiring Christian missionaries share their story of how they were called to missions.
My journey to the mission field #002
For me it began a long time ago. I can remember specifically in high school watching a video from a doctor who had been in southern Sudan, and just what life was like there, and there was just tremendous need and nobody wanted to go. And so I just remember thinking at that point, I want to go, I want to be able to help in some way.
All the way through high school and all the way through college, God continued to put people in my life who were from that area of the world and had been there and been working there, and just a little bit more insight each step of the way, and giving me more of a passion to be in that part of the world.
My call came separately from Jared's. We didn't know each other and it was my senior year in college, and I really felt a tug on my heart to work overseas at a boarding school in Europe for missionary kids. And I spent my entire senior year applying, being accepted, talking to a mission agency, and I was to the point where I was going to start raising support. And I just felt that I had done what I was supposed to do and God was saying "OK, you've passed the test that I had for you, but you don't need to go now."
That summer I met Jared. And we ended up getting married, and then together we felt called to missions. And so, it wasn't that I just jumped on his train and said, Oh, I can go. I had felt my own call personally in my own life, so I knew that God had called me, He had called Jared, and then He put us together.
I had finished college, and then I went back and got some mechanic training and some stuff like that. And we got more involved in our church, we got involved in mission board, we just became more involved in those things. I started a Bible study and mentoring a guy. I was seeking out things that, as Christians we should be involved in anyway, but we realized that once you get to the mission field, you're not going to just transform into this incredible person who can do all these things. You're the same person there as you are here in the States, and if you're not doing those things here in the States, you're not just going to start doing them there because you're in a different country, in a different context. If anything, it's harder.
