Teaching at an MK school
A teacher from the Black Forest Academy in Germany talks about how teaching at a missionary kids school is different from teaching in the United States.
Teaching at an MK school
What makes teaching at an MK school unique?
How is teaching at an MK school different than teaching in the U.S.?
Well, for one thing, as we talk about the students, these students don't have to be there. It's a privilege to be there. So it's amazing how, when you ask them to do something, they do it. I know on my first day of school I blew the whistle and I said, "OK, everybody, on the yellow line." I bent down to get my clipboard, I turned around, and they were all standing on the yellow line. And I said, "Wow, we're going to have some fun," because these guys are actually doing what I ask them to do.
Well, after school, the students are free, they have free time, and a lot of the teachers will use that time to walk with students, talk with them, share life. They have small groups, a lot of the teachers are involved with small groups so they have students they're building into every week. They coach a sport. They give lessons after school. They have students over to their home for dinner very often. There's activities that the staff go on — they do overnight, they do senior trip — all kinds of different activities. And so, the ministry opportunities are really special, they go deep with these students. During the day, it's pretty much class time, and they're working. After school, it's a whole different ball game.
When we talk about class size at a missionary kid school, they're smaller. They are wonderful to have these students in your class. These are students who their hearts are open, their minds are open, and our classes have a foundation of Jesus Christ. And so as we put Christ in the middle of everything it's just amazing, and it's really — ah, I don't know how to say it other than — it's a sweet environment, it's really a wonderful place to teach.
